There are many definitions for Social Justice. For Dictionary.com, the definition of Social Justice is the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society. Google’s definition of Social Justice is the justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. Before i first came to Social Justice High School, I have never heard of the word “Social Justice.” But after attending this school for four years, i developed my own definition for the term Social Justice. My definition of Social Justice would be that everyone should have the same opportunities and rights no matter of race, gender, or class.
One of the main obstacle we face when we try to achieve Social Justice are the people that are blocking our path to achieve it. Our path to Social justice could be blocked in many ways. One of these ways would be the lack of education. The oppressor want the oppressed to be uneducated so that they can’t fight for Social Justice. If the oppressed are not educated, then they will depend heavily on the oppressors. historical example of people being oppressed are African Americans. This group of people were brought from Africa by American colonist for manual labor, where they were separated from their families, whipped, and humiliated. Even after they were freed, it took 100 years for their rights to be recognized.
The only way to achieve Social Justice is to struggle peacefully. People can struggle for Social Justice by protesting and organizing all other people that want Social Justice. If people work together to achieve the same goal, Social Justice is possible. Past events have proven that this is possible. An example of this was the Anti-War Movement that took place during the Vietnam War in the United States. The main objective of this movement was to end America’s involvement in the conflict, since most of the American public believed that the United States had no right to interfere Vietnam’s conflict.
My issue, the environmental impact of the Vietnam War, is connected to Social Justice because even after the war ended in 1975, 39 years ago, it still has an impact on the native people and on the soldiers that fought the war. Today, many people have had health problems because of the herbicides that were sprayed on Vietnam’s forest by the United States during the war.
